PREFERENTIAL FLOW AND TRACE METALS

Trace or "heavy" metals, typically immobilized during matrix flow through conventional homogenized laboratory soil columns, rapidly passed through undisturbed soil profiles with intact macropore structures. Similar results have been observed with trace elements from sludge applied to undisturbed soil columns. Long-term leaching of trace metals through preferential fow paths has been observed in a field site. Previous research has also observed cadmium in tile outlfow shortly after application of municipal wastewater sludge.
